what does your signature say about you?

86

By prabhjotbedi

The Why?

The art of reading handwriting is called graphology.

The logic is pretty simple.

Handwriting is nothing but an output of the electrical impulses of the brain.

Since it is an output, one can gauge the person/individual from the handwriting.

Now, why stress on the signature?

In an ever increasing electronic world, you just don't write that often. you email, you text, you surf. all that leaves you using the standard fonts and hence everything seems similar.

however, you still sign documents, contracts, applications and more. That is where your personality, your personality traits can and are visible.

think about your childhood. your early childhood, in the early years of school. you were taught repeatedly how to write. your teachers, parents spent a considerable time trying to get you to write in that cursive handwriting that everyone desires. but here is the kicker. all of us landed up with our own style of handwriting, didn't we?

That's coz, we are individuals, with our own personality, our own desires, abilities and learning. Your handwriting is nothing but you expressed on paper.

Your signature, is a snapshot of that personality.

The Basics

I wrote about the some basic rules of handwriting analysis and how you could find out a little bit more about yourself.  The hub 'What does my handwriting say about me?' is at http://hubpages.com/hub/what-does-my-handwriting-tell-about-me

Now back to your signature.

some of the same rules as handwriting apply here (please read here) to.

But some are only for signatures:

  1. size of the signature
  2. size of the first letter of the signature
  3. slant of the signature
  4. the use of first name, last name or alphabets
  5. underlining the signature
  6. dotting the signature
  7. any backward loops in the signature

size of the signature

The rule of thumb is this ' the bigger the signature, the more gregarious, outgoing the person is'

the smaller the signature, the person could be:

- a miser with money, emotions or self

- an introvert

- unassuming

size of the first letter of the signature

The size of the first letter gives you an idea of what the person thinks or feels about themselves in relation to or in comparison to the rest of the world.

the difference in the highest point of the letter and the lowest point is the percieved difference they feel is between them and the common people.

this is sometimes also used to gauge ego.

some variations are used.

- if the letter is in capital, (S) the more pronounced self-eesteem

- is the letter is in lettercase (s) then the person is more grounded

slant of the signature

an upward slant shows ambition and a forward thinking individual

an straight signature, someone who is balanced in approach to life and work

and downward slant, i.e. the signature starts on the line and moves below may show someone who is not confident of themselves or had self-esteem issues

the use of first name, last name or alphabets

most people use both, the first name & the last name (family name) in their signatures.

but here are some variations and what they mean:

 - only first name is used - the person believes in him/herself and does not take recourse to family.  is independent in thought and will most likely move out to work by him/herself.  very conscious of the money they make

- only last name used - the person is a family person. loves them, but may have issues surviving outside the protection offered.

- first name letters + last name full - balanced.

- last name signed before first name - puts family before self

underlining the signature

no underline - unassuming person. not too fussy and does not need to impress self-worth or accomplishments on anyone.

one line below the signature - likes people to know he/she exists.  is bound to talk about self but not too much or not in excess.  likes to ensure presence is felt.

two lines below the signature - loves to take credit. ensures people know the favors he/she has done for them.

the line cuts through the signature - tends to go back on his/her word and generally has a tendency to contradict him/herself

dotting the signature

some people will dot the signature.

most will do so after scratching a line under the signature.

the line is to ensure that they underline their presence, but a dot is worse.

one dot - you should know who I am, and what I do and what I did, but here is another reminder

two dots - dont forget who did this.

any backward loops in the signature

it could mean any of the following:

- someone who thinks a lot, about everything

- someone who will take everything upon themselves and be miserable till everyone around is happy

- someone who will take go about explanations in a round about way

- someone who may fib if he/she feel it is required.

What you can do!

handwriting analysis or signature analysis is not an exact science and really, you should develop your own little notations on the material mentioned.

I started many years back and over the years started creating a mental model.  How I use it is like this:

- the handwriting or signature will not be the only criteria to work with, for or hire someone.

- I will form a general opinion (like all us do, first impressions) and then take away or add to that mental picture.

But here is the fantastic part!

you can change yourself, your personality, a little at a time, slowly, but you can, but changing your signature.

leave your comments and I will tell you what you can do.

Very Interesting article! Though I do not normally believe in reading the handwriting, as mine changes, I think, based on the mood and circumstances, I found quite a good insight at reading the signature traits.

hi this is article is very useful.

In my signature I make a big backward loop first I write first letter of my name then go back and write my full last name. Then I underline last name and put a dot just under my first name... almost every mark you described is useful for me... I need some more specific analysis... thanks...

ivie 23 months ago

what a bunch of bullshit. To obvious...a large signature means someone wants to be noticed? what ever. Who knows what goes on in peoples psychology? i wonder if anyone actually did any real analysis to see if a third party psychologist would actually make the same determination after performing psychoanalysis on people. Don't waste your time analyzing your own signature or anyone elses. Just feel who you are! Someones personally and their signature can be related but they can also be very mutually exclusive.

Mohit Kumar Chilkoti 21 months ago

Hi...

It's awesome...

I mark my sign. with my full first name + Kr(middle name short) + full last name.. like MohitKrChilKoti ,with an upward slant and an underline and that underline strikes through both K's lower backward slated line in my signature...I use capital K's in my sign. and I stretch my K little longer than usual....which then gets cut by the underline....My signature matches my handwriting but made a little faster pace and sign. is pretty readable...

I write First letter 'M'in Capitals little bigger in size with noticable bend at the end just before it touches the 'o'....Could you please tell me about my personality.....

Thanks In Advance....

I had my signature read once by a professional. She told me that I was impatient for something to happen in the future (at the time I was about to start college) and that I was a good storyteller. Which was great because I was just starting with my novel and wasn't sure if I had what it takes. It's amazing how much you can learn about someone just by their signature.

Jill 15 months ago

I have two signatures, one for boring official things and one for everything else such as my artwork. In both with my last name, which is Stock, the cross on the t goes all the way through the k and comes back ever so slightly. The end of the k is long. I write Jill and then my last name under it in the art signature and finish it off with a big heart around the entire thing. No site seems to have anything to say about these details. What do they seem to me to you?

prabhjotbedi profile image

prabhjotbedi Hub Author 15 months ago

your creative flourish is on display! our signatures tend to show off our mental state. most stars, movies, music or sports who do a lot of autographs will invariably have larger autograph signatures so to speak with big bold lines or smileys etc.

The persona takes over and the signature captures it. Your big heart is just that, the artist in you, the creative person in you being captured on paper.

The last name below the fist name could have either of two meanings. 1. you are more yourself or you think of yourself as self made or a individual different from your family OR 2. you accept that your family is your support system but what you are, YOU are and not made because of the family.

As for the cross on the t, since it appears on the formal signature too, then it is a sign of aggressiveness or even temper. If the stroke is powerful and long, it could indicate that you are vocal or expressive when angry. You do let people know dont you!

I hope this helps.

Thanks for stopping by and leaving a note!

What kind of bull shit is this? I can probably change my signature if I wanted to, that doesn't mean I've changed my personality. Alvin Seville 12 months ago

simple and informative. I write my name and then my surname slanting upwards and the 1st letter of both the names are bigger than the rest of the letters. Then a small line below in the middle and a dot below that. Any extra info about me there?

Jovian 12 months ago

Yes, I think that's more along the lines of what I mean :-o Does it mean that they think less of me, because my first letter is smaller? Perhaps they think I have high ideals, because of the emphasized height of 'f'?

prabhjotbedi profile image

prabhjotbedi Hub Author 11 months ago

@Jovian :) It is not that they think small of you coz of your smaller letter (first one), it is that your behaviour/mannerisms are such that you may come across as meek.

Send me your signature, if you would want me to help you change it a little bit.

Jovian 11 months ago

Oh, it's not my signature that I'm speaking of, but how other people write my name. Often, it looks like this:

tiFFany

The 'f' often reaches far over the bar of the 't' which seems strange. Do you know what this means? I could send a scan of both mine and the other signatures if you'd like :-)

How lobg did it take you to learn to read signeratures? and also, I noticed that you mentioned that one could improve oneself to make a better signature...so can one change their signature to fit the profile or "personality" they want to be...does it cause a pshycological change

prabhjotbedi profile image

prabhjotbedi Hub Author 8 months ago

@Carol I got hooked by a simple 2 page description of it in one of Bejan Daruwala's forecast books. I thought the thing was a laugh until i tried it on people around me and my friends.

Since then, I have spent considerable time learning from books and websites but I have over the years made some observations for myself. Everything I read, I counter checked and only accepted once I saw it could be applied to people around me.

You can change your handwriting to change your self. for e.g. if someone wants to be a lot more careful and detail oriented or would like to not be careless anymore, I suggest they start by doting all their 'i's and crossing all their 't's.

Just that small change can prove very effective.

hope this helps.

Cheers!

My handwriting changes ALL the time, it's been like that for most of my life. What could this mean? I either change it because of my mood, or I just feel comfortable writing another way. I'm one of those people that doodle all the time, but it's mainly just writing, alot of the time I'm either writing my or my son's name

Is it ok if I send you my signature and you tell me what it means? I kind of already have anyway =)

What does it mean if you sign with your middle intial and it is bigger than all the rest of your signature??

Hi,

I was surfing the net for some effective signature ideas as i am planning to change my signature. Google poped out in search your blog so i Checked out your article and found it really worthy.

Could you pls suggest me should i go for a change or not. How can i connect you...

bambi 7 months ago

My signiture is just the 1st letter of my name and the last letter crossing over each other with the W having a backwards loop, and the cross of my A runs through the W. All slanting upwards. Bit of an interesting one! i want to change it since ive had it for many years... its just become an easy signiture to do now.. and just dont feel bothered to change it. haha. Very interesting.

@Jolene.T do send it to me on mail@prabhjotbedi.com. regarding you changing you signature or doodling, you have already answered it yourself. our handwriting changes based on the task at hand, the mood and the reason why we write too. for e.g. most people sign official documents - loan, property etc - with a lot more care and hence the signature is sharper and with a decent amount of pressure on the paper.

however, if you were just doing something that you may trash later or not show to anyone else, it would could be messy, illegible.

@Carrie R Burns is the middle name the same as a parent or grand parent? if that is the case then maybe they play a very important role in your life or maybe you want to be like them.

Very useful info and comments. It's interesting to know that we change our handwriting based on mood.I change my handwriting several times a day. My friend said my mood is like the UK weather, unpredictable, keep changing. Surprisingly, just like my handwriting. lllooolll. And now I'm thinking about changing my signature (I already have a few) to HML (initial alphabets for my full name), what do you think prabhjotbedi?

prabhjotbedi profile image

@fiza I agree with your comments but not with the idea of moving to initials as signature.

Hi Prabhjot,

I read ur article. First of all, it is really a nice and informative article. I liked it very much.

Btw i can read handwritings & signatures myself but i have a doubt.

If a person has exactly same signature as his/her handwriting.. I mean to say that if the signature is very simple.. Very much simple.. What does that indicate?

Looking forward to a prompt reply of urs.

Regards

Sanya :)

I found your article to be very interesting. Do you have any idea what it means when you are communicating via e-mail and the other person uses correct punctuation except when using a certain persons name. The persons name is often written in lower case letters?

I probably would have taken this article more serious if there weren't grammar mistakes and odd words like 'coz'. I had to read the sentence twice, it caught me off guard. Other then that, it's very interesting.

Graphology

Prof. Wingle – Graphology professor

Practicing SMS gradually kills the speed of writing in exam, time will not be sufficient. Impact on brain.

Hand is only tool writing comes from brain.

Minor changes in your handwriting/Signature can bring major success in your life

Handwriting changes from time to time i.e. 4 times in life

1) First change upto 8 years do not get grip

2) Second change 8 to 13 years teenage physical, biological handwriting changes

3) Third change 14 to 27 years major changes

4) Fourth change 28 to 45 to 50 years age may change or may not.

Change of handwriting is myth

Slant, size, degree of pressure, spacing between words does not change

Look of handwriting may change but not the basics of the hand writing of the individual

Key letters of handwriting does not change even hand left or right changes

Depth of pressure

Spoken words are the symbols of mental experience

Written words are the symbols of spoken words by Aristotle

Color red indicates anger

Pink indicates love

Mind impacts body vise versa

21 days minimum and maximum 41 days for changing of writing

What is graphology

Graphology is the Greek for writing

Logy means studying

First symbol is circle

Second symbol is arrow

Alphabets invented by chines however Europeans continued research

First 58 alphabets reduced to 48 then to 28. from 28 to 26 alphabets

Each alphabet i.e. a to z reflects head to toe.

Upper zone d t h k l

Middle zone a e I o u s m n

Lower zone y g

Entire 3 zone letter is f

Upset with stomach middle zone

Thinking with upper zone

All zones dominating handwriting size is big may be 1 cm indicates leadership qualities

What is grapho theraphy

Signature – sing + Nature – Image shown to public

Sign means symbol

Nature means it reveals the nature of symbol

By making small changes in your sign can change your self

Handwriting – how it works?

Your nervous system acts as wire from brain to hand. A thought in your brain is transmitted by electrical impulses thought nervous system and fibers of your body, arms and fingers. The fingers are only vehicles that put in writing. Handwriting is known as brain writing.

Graphology today

-Is more into our lives

-to improve health to improve prosperity

-to deal with fears and phobias

-to do effective self management

-to develop and achieve the goal

Loops in letter t, incomplete y, left margin irregular indicates fear

Any loops in letter t and l people will have fear of imagination

Reducing loops in l, t can overcome fear.

Your subconscious mind

Design your brain

Human brain

The brain gives impulses to your hand. This gets imprinted on the paper trough the pen.

The impulses released by the pen are interpreted and i.e. handwriting analysis and the science behind it is known as graphology.
